Olmert: No Agreement of Principles in fall

We are formulating a joint declaration, so that should there be a regional summit, it will headline the meeting." The agenda of this government since the day it was established has been to push toward taking advantage of opportunities to launch a peace process," he said. "We are examining whether or not a serious process is possible, which meets our expectations within the basic parameters of providing security to Israeli citizens. If we don't examine this, we will not be able to forgive ourselves." Provinziell, amateurhaft, grenzdebil. The prime minister added that the negotiating teams that will try to formulate the joint declaration will be comprised of representatives of the Prime Minister's Office, the Foreign Ministry, and the Defense Ministry. Der erste Veruch von Olmert sich Barak und dessen Parteiführung zu instrumentalisieren scheiterte am Wochenende: "Sources close to Labor chairman Ehud Barak rejected claims by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's associates on Sunday that the addition of Labor MK Ami Ayalon to the cabinet was a sign the party would remain in the government longer than expected. Olmert's associates praised Barak for bringing Ayalon into the cabinet and expressed hope that Ayalon's joining was a sign that Labor was in the government for the long haul. Ayalon met with Olmert ahead of his decision to join the government, and Ayalon reportedly hinted that he would not become a minister if it was for only a few months. But sources close to Barak said he was still committed to his promise to remove Labor from the government ahead of the release of the Winograd Committee on the Second Lebanon War's final report, which is expected at the beginning of 2008. They cautioned Olmert's associates against "making political spin" out of an internal Labor issue. "The people in the Prime Minister's Office are wrong if they think Ami entering the cabinet will help this government complete its term in office," a source close to the defense minister said. "Barak will make the decision about how long to keep Labor in the government based on what is right for him under the circumstances at the time. The decision will not be impacted by Ami joining the government." The sources said the main factor that would determine how long Labor remained in the government would be Barak's success in repairing his image with the public. Barak loyalists said that adding Ayalon to the government would help in this quest because it would neutralize opposition to Barak within the party. [JPost]

Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman and Jordanian Minister for Scientific Research Khaled Toukan signed Sunday's memorandum of understanding on the sidelines of a nuclear energy summit in Vienna. Under the agreement, the two countries will work together to develop requirements for appropriate power reactors, fuel service arrangements, civilian training, nuclear safety, energy technology and other related areas, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement." Unter Abspielen der Marseillaise verzog Kouchner seine Miene auf Gewitter und donnerte ein kräftiges: "We have to prepare for the worst, and the worst, sir, is war." heraus. "Bolton said Sunday that Israel's reported military operation inside Syria earlier this month should be regarded as a 'clear message to Iran' that its nuclear efforts will not be ignored by the international community. "I think it would be unusual for Israel to conduct a military operation inside Syria other than for a very high value target, and certainly a Syrian effort in the nuclear weapons area would qualify," Bolton told Channel 10 in an interview broadcast Sunday. "I think this is a clear message not only to Syria, I think it's a clear message to Iran as well, that its continued efforts to acquire nuclear weapons are not going to go unanswered."

When Tony Blair was Britain's prime minister, he advocated talking to Hamas until he was roundly told by both King Abdullah of Jordan and Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah that such a move would help destroy their own administrations. Now he is the Quartet's envoy, he is reportedly being informally advised by Daniel Levy, who has repeatedly urged engagement with Hamas, Hizbullah and the Muslim Brotherhood. But the arguments used by Levy are dangerously wrong.
