Persuading Arabs

"This is not an issue of quid pro quo. We are working with these states to fight back extremism. ... This effort will help bolster forces of moderation and support a broader strategy to counter the negative influences of al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran." "Rice said the arms deal ... was the fruit of years of partnership and a recognition of the region's strategic importance." "Bush is ending his failed career the only way America knows how: Here, take the money, and work it out yourselves." [Yoel Marcus].

Machen wir mal ein Logik-Beispiel. "Laser Guided Bombs help bolster forces of moderation." ["The New York Times reported Saturday that the Pentagon was trying to ease Israeli concerns about the arms deal to Riyadh by asking the Saudis to accept "restrictions on the range, size and location of the satellite-guided bombs," including a commitment not to store the weapons at air bases close to Israeli territory."] Ja mehr noch: "Further modernizing the Egyptian and Saudi Armed Forces and increasing interoperability will bolster our partners' resolve in confronting the threat of radicalism and cement their respective roles as regional leaders in the quest for Middle East peace and in ensuring Lebanon's freedom and independence. We plan to consult closely with Congress and our allies on the specifics of these agreements."

The ministers also called on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to release more than 10,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails."

Weitere Nachrichten: Israel has renewed contacts with official "Palestinian Authority" representatives abroad, in the wake of the formation of the "Palestinian government" headed by "independent" Salam Fayad. Last week, the Foreign Ministry issued instructions to all its ambassadors and consuls, saying that, "In light of the new situation that has emerged in the "Palestinian Authority", and the formation of the new "government" headed by Salam Fayad, the instructions that banned all contacts with official Palestinian diplomatic representatives have been altered. It is allowable to resume contacts with Palestinian representatives, like in the past." ++++ Russia intends to downgrade its ties to Hamas, and no high-level contacts are planned for the near future, Russia's deputy foreign minister said Tuesday. Putin: "I want to assure you that Russia will support you as the legitimate leader of the Palestinian people." ++++ Jordan rules out sending military to West Bank to bolster Abbas, fight militants ++++ Und das nächste Gerücht: Olmert, Abbas holding secret talks on final status agreement.
