Presidential Elections Postponed

Lebanon's turmoil worsened on Friday with rival political camps failing to find a consensus that would allow parliament to choose a new head of state before pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud's term expires at midnight. At 1: 30 PM Speaker Nabih Berri postponed the election for the fifth time, citing the absence of a quorum. The new election date is next Friday November 30, 2007. Antony Shadid in der WaPost: Lebanon finds itself in a familiar place these days, facing the unknown. Its worst crisis since the 1975-90 civil war builds to a climax at midnight Friday, when the term of President Emile Lahoud ends. Despite weeks of French-led mediation, Lebanon's factions appeared unlikely to reach a consensus on Lahoud's replacement by the deadline, plunging the country into a constitutional limbo that sets up scenarios as diverse as the country's problems: rival governments, military rule or a vacuum, along with the civil strife each option could bring.

Israel meldet den hollywoodreifen Fall eines Spy-Pychiaters: Tel Aviv District Court on Friday indicted a Major in the Israel Defense Forces reserves over espionage charges for offering information to Iran, Russia and Hamas. Eine heute veröffentlichte poll besagt: Israelis support the upcoming Annapolis peace conference next week, but don't believe it will help bring an end to the conflict, a poll showed Friday. Almost 70 percent of Israelis support holding the conference, but roughly the same number - 71 percent - believe it won't help move along the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, according to the poll conducted by the Dahaf Research Institute and published Friday in Yediot Ahronot. ... Asked if Israel should agree to dismantle most of its West Bank settlements - one of the key Palestinian demands - 55 percent said no. Aus Cairo wird eben gemeldet das die Arabische Liga sich der syrischen Linie in Annapolis auch über den Golan reden zu sollen verpflichtet hat. Kommentar: Yossi Alpher, "Bring Syria into the talks": The strategic subtext of the meeting scheduled in Annapolis next week to launch an Israeli-Palestinian peace process is Washington's desire to shore up Arab support for its problematic policies on Iraq and Iran. The United States has been persuaded by the Saudis, Egyptians and others that the prospect of such a process will do the trick. The problem is that under present circumstances the chances for success of a renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace effort are close to nil.
