Islamists loose in Jordan

und erheben Vorwürfe: Preliminary results from Jordan’s parliamentary elections showed the opposition Islamist party lost more than half its seats in an election it said was marred by fraud. Islamic Action Front (IAF) candidates won only seven of the 22 seats they fought in Tuesday’s elections for the 110-seat assembly, an official source told Reuters. The IAF won 17 seats in 2003, when it ended a boycott that had turned parliament into a pro-government talking shop and became the only real opposition in the assembly. Initial figures on Wednesday showed a turnout of 55 percent of 2.4 million eligible voters.

*** Westbank: Während sich die Verhandlungen für das auf den 27ten wohl eintägig angesetzte Treffen in Annapolis schwierig gestalten gibt es zwei technische Fortschritte: Israel has given approval for the Palestinians to get dozens of armoured vehicles in a gesture to president Mahmud Abbas ahead of a key US peace meeting, officials said on Tuesday. Nummer Zwei: Palestinian Tourism Minister Khouloud Daibes [The sexiest technokrat on earth] and Justice Minister Ali Al-Khashan announced a new plan on Tuesday combat the phenomenon of killing women for reasons of so-called "family honor." The ministers made the announcement during a meeting of the Palestinian Working Women Society for Development (PWWSD) in Ramallah. More than a hundred women attended the meeting. Während die israelische Seite mal wieder von Fortschritten berichtet, negieren die palästinensischen Unterhändler dieses: Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will head to the Annapolis peace conference next week without the "joint document" that they have been working to draft throughout the fall, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday. Hier eine der gegensetzlichen Meldungen: Agreement has been reached on a draft for a joint Israel-Palestinian statement ahead of the Annapolis conference, Army Radio quoted diplomatic officials as saying following a meeting between Israeli chief negotiator Tzipi Livni and the head of the Palestinian team, Ahmed Qurei (Abu Ala). Während über den "Standoff" zwischen PFLP und Fatah in Nablus nichts mehr berichtet wird, wird anderswo in Nablus wild umhergeschossen: Israeli soldiers shot two Palestinian children and a man in an ongoing invasion of Al-Fara'a refugee camp near the West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday, witnesses said.

Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, both of Labor, approved the move after Palestinian farmers and Israeli exporters appealed to the High Court of Justice against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Simchon and Barak. ... The international aid group Oxfam warned Wednesday of an increasing risk to public health in Gaza due to a reduction in fuel supplies. About 225,000 people in Gaza do not receive adequate amounts of drinking water because water pumps are not operating at full capacity, Oxfam said in a release.

Zudem: In a flurry of diplomatic activity ahead of the U.S.-sponsored Annapolis summit, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told Tony Blair, envoy from the Quartet of Mideast mediators, Wednesday he will be holding a mini-summit of Arab leaders in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. Mubarak will meet with the the Jordanian and Palestinian leaders on Thursday, just a day before an important Arab League summit in Cairo when Arab countries are expected to announce whether they will attend Monday's conference in Annapolis, Maryland. The U.S. announced Tuesday that the conference will take place on November 27. The team investigating Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's possible corruption in the sale of Bank Leumi is expected to decide by Sunday whether the evidence gathered in the case justifies charging him. Ein Westbericht: Participants for Mideast talks sought by White House

*** Jerusalem-Frage: As the government talks about dividing Jerusalem, Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski on Wednesday proposed a NIS 200 million '"Marshall Plan'" for east Jerusalem, in an eleventh-hour attempt to improve the infrastructure and living conditions in east Jerusalem in order to keep the city united.
