Abbas talks to Hamas

Zuvor zwei libanesische Militär-Statements. "Lebanese anti-aircraft units in the Tyre region fired at six Israeli military aircraft overflying the south." The IAF sorties prompted the Lebanese military to raise its alert level. The army also conducted ground patrols along the Lebanese border with Israel and appealed to UNIFIL to demand a cessation to the flights. Und: The Lebanese Army Command announced Wednesday that Lebanon's army chief Gen. Michel Suleiman is not a candidate for the presidential office and urged keeping his name outside political manipulation.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has renewed contacts with Hamas, which were severed following the organization's violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June of this year, Israel Radio reported. Abbas's office confirmed that he had met with three Hamas West Bank officials: Faraj Rumaneh, Hussein Abu Quaik and Nasser A-din al-Shaar but gave no further details. The news comes despite Abbas's statements on Sunday that he would resume talks with Hamas only if the organization relinquishes control over the Gaza Strip. Abbas had also said that Hamas was planning to overthrow the Palestinian Authority government in the West Bank with the help of external forces.

Update Attack on Syria, Part XXXVI: The September 6 raid over Syria was carried out by the US Air Force, the Al-Jazeera Web site reported Friday. The Web site quoted Israeli and Arab sources as saying that two strategic US jets armed with tactical nuclear weapons carried out an attack on a nuclear site under construction. The sources were quoted as saying that Israeli F-15 and F-16 jets provided cover for the US planes. The sources added that each US plane carried one tactical nuclear weapon and that the site was hit by one bomb and was totally destroyed. [Schwer vorstellbar.]

In a letter to the High Court of Justice, State Prosecution on Friday defended the government's decision to curb the supply of fuel and electricity to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, claiming it is not a form of collective punishment. State prosecution argued the measure was appropriate considering that the area is controlled by an organization that calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and is used as a base for militants who launch regular rocket attacks against its civilian population. "Any measure taken by one state that has negative consequences on the economy of another will also hurt the citizens of that state," State Prosecution wrote. "In such instances, one can claim that any measure made within the context of an armed conflict is a form of collective punishment of the civilians of that state; a mistaken and absurd argument that counters international law and common practice." "According to such an incorrect argument, imposing a financial boycott or pressure on countries such as South Africa during the Apartheid, or Iran today, would not be possible because any such measure would hurt the populace of the said country,"

Hundreds of Palestinian security officers arrived in Nablus on Friday in a Western-backed crackdown on gunmen in the West Bank intended to impose order ahead of a peace conference with Israel. The police are expected to significantly establish their presence in the town by the afternoon hours.

The US is concerned that Hamas and Hizbullah agents may penetrate the porous US-Mexican border in order to carry out terrorist attacks, according to Robert Grenier, the former head of the US Central Intelligence Agency's counterterrorism center. His comments were featured in a report published by the Mexican press on Thursday. Speaking at an event in Mexico, Grenier—who now runs his own international security firm called Kroll—said that reports indicate the United States is fearful that Iran, Hamas, and/or Hizbullah may seek to set up operations in Mexico in order to carry out terrorist attacks in the US.
