Kurznachrichten

Nach langem Suchen habe ich doch noch einen guten Text bei Saban gefunden. Steven Heydemann, "Upgrading Authoritarianism in the Arab World"

Attack on Syria, Part XXXVIII: Joshua Landis bespricht: Jackson Diehl, deputy editorial editor at the Washington Post, in his article, All Still Quiet on the Syria Bombing, praises the US and Israel for the restraint they have so far shown in not bragging about bombing Syria on Sept 6 that Diehl calls "that remarkable event — which was both an audacious act of preemption and a revelation of an apparent Syrian bomb program."

Diese Nachricht ist erstmal Blödsinn. Der Kadima-MK heißt Yoel und nicht Yisrael. Ysrael ist bei Yisrael Beiteinu: A Kadima MK lashed out Monday at Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's talks with the Palestinians, terming the upcoming Annapolis conference "a fantasy, not a vision." MK Yisrael Hasson, a former deputy chairman of the Shin Bet security service, punned that the conference should be called Anopheles, the mosquito that carries malaria, because it "bears all the signs of malaria: delusions, tremors and a high fever."

An estimated $20 million is smuggled into the Gaza Strip each month through the Philadelphi Route, according to Rep. Gary Ackerman, chairman of the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. In an interview with Haaretz on Monday, Ackerman pointed an accusing finger at Egypt, arguing that Cairo's failure to control the Sinai border with the Gaza Strip helps to empower Hamas. [Es dürfte im Übrigen sehr schwer für Ackermann werden ägyptische Gesetze zu finden, die einen Finanztransfer in den Gaza-Streifen verbieten.]

The Arabist: Fifty Israeli peace and human rights activists have approached Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, via the Egyptian embassy in Tel Aviv, calling upon him to immediately open the Rafah Border Crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip to free movement of persons and goods, and thus break the siege imposed at the order of Defence Minister Barak, and which is pushing the population of the strip over the edge of humanitarian disaster.

Und Steve Erlanger hat nähere Details zu der bereits als möglichen Schund identifizierten Nachricht der IDF ähm... Jpost Wunderdinge in Sachen Abwasser zu vollbringen: "Gaza’s Reflection in a Foul Threat"
