IDF kills Five

Aus den letzten 36 Stunden sind die folgenden Ereignisse im Israelisch-Palästinensischen Krieg zu berichten:

*** Die Frequenz der palästinensischen Attacken durch Qassam-Raketen geht vorerst deutlich zurück. Momentan gelten seit Dienstag Morgen etwa 127 Qassam-Raketen und 63 Mörsergranaten-Angriffe als bestätigt. Von neuen Schäden wird nicht berichtet.
*** Am Freitag Nachmittag wird eine Zivilistin bei einem Luftangriff der IAF auf das [leere] Hamas-Innenministerium in Tel al-Hawa getötet. Vor dem Gebäude das vollständig zerstört wurde hielt sich eine Hochzeitsgesellschaft auf. Gezählt werden 46 verletzte Zivilisten, darunter Frauen und Kinder. Nahe Dir al-Balah wird auch das Hauptquartier der Marineeinheit der Hamas-Polizei zerstört.
*** Am Freitag Abend wird ein Luftangriff auf Raketenabschußrampen notiert. Am Samstag Morgen werden bei einem Luftangriff in der Nähe des Jabalia-Flüchtlingslagers zwei Hamas-Kämpfer getötet und drei weitere verletzt. Eine israelische Einheit hatte zuvor das Lager mit nach palästinensischen Angaben 40 Panzern [suspekt] attackiert und nach einem stundenlangen Schußwechsel vier Hamas-Angehörige verhaftet. Ein weiteres Hamas-Mitglied stirbt in einem Krankenhaus an den Verletzungen die er sich zwei Tage zuvor zugezogen hatte. Ein weiterer Luftangriff vor Gaza-City trifft ein Auto, den Milizionären gelingt jedoch zuvor die Flucht. Weitere Luftangriffe auf unbewohnte Gebiete werden berichtet.

Die Aktionen im Jabalia-Camp werden als neue Strategie des israelischen Verteidigungministers Ehud Barak verkauft. Jabalia liegt fünf Kilometer in Gaza-Territorium, Verhaftungsaktionen unterblieben in den letzten Monaten. Weiterhin wird eine größere IDF-Offensive verneint. Aussenamtssprecher McCormick hat, oh wunder, die amerikanische Position bezüglich des Krieges verdeutlicht: Legale Notwehr. Derweil steigt die rhetorische Bekräftigung Gegenschläge auszuüben bei sämtlichen palästinensischen Militärflügeln. Der ramallahnische Fatah-Chef Mahmoud Abbas weist Spekulationen über einen Rücktritt von sich. Die Hamas gibt bei einer Pressekonferenz die Namen der Rädelsführer eines angeblich versuchten Selbstmordattentats auf Hamas-Chef Haniyeh bekannt. Der Secretary General des Fatah-Chefs, At-Tayyib Abdul-Rahim, soll verwickelt sein. Bezüglich der anstehenden neuen Friedensverhandlungen äußert sich der ramallahnische Informationsminister Ryad al-Maliki zurückhaltend optimistisch: "Hamas is responsible for the Israeli madness and the massacres the [Israeli] army carries out everyday against our people in Gaza Strip." Während Gazas Tankstellen wohl zu 90% bereits trocken sind wird in der Nacht von Montag zum Dienstag wohl das Elektrizitätswerk den Deinst einstellen müssen. Während sich der oberste Hüter der UN, Baan-Kim-Unnütz mit den Ohren im Hintern von George Bush wackelt poltert John Durgard, UN-Offizieller, Fachgebiet Gazastreifen gegen das "collective punishment" der Israelis das tatsächlich gegen die Vierte Genver Konvention verstößt. Shlomo Dror, Sprecher des Verteidigungsministeriums weiß Rat: Es gibt keine humanitäre Kastrophe im Gazastreifen und es wird auch keine geben, ... da es bald keinen Gazstreifen mehr geben wird. Eher die IDF fürchtend knicken die Kanadier hingegen ein: Canada's foreign ministry, responding to pressure from close allies, said on Saturday it would remove the United States and Israel from a watch list of countries where prisoners risk being tortured. Both nations expressed unhappiness after it emerged that they had been listed in a document that formed part of a training course manual on torture awareness given to Canadian diplomats. Canadian Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier said he regretted the embarrassment caused by the public disclosure of the manual, which also classified some U.S. interrogation techniques as torture. Syrien: Syrian President Bashar Assad marked UNESCO's choice of Damascus as the 2008 Capital of Arab Culture by describing the city as a center of culture as well as resistance. The German Charge d'Affaires Hansjoerg Haber visited Sidon Friday to hand over six service vehicles worth $140,000 to the South Lebanon Water and Waste-Water Establishment (SLWWWE). In coordination with the Council for Development and Reconstruction, the SLWWWE and the Council of the South, 19 projects and interventions have been identified that will be financed through this program's budget of 12 million euros. Altogether, Germany has pledged the sum of 105 million euros - about $150 million at current exchannge rates - in direct emergency aid at the Stockholm and Paris III conferences. ++++ Arab League chief Amr Moussa said before traveling to Damascus on Friday that the solution to Lebanon's political crisis is not stalled over the makeup of the next cabinet but over a lack of genuine desire to end the impasse. Things will not advance in the absence of true political will to end the crisis," Moussa said after a three-hour meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri on Friday. "We are advancing slowly. MIFTAH, the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy strongly condemns the latest escalation in Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians and has brought the death toll over the past four days to 35. On January 18, Israeli F-16 fighter planes dropped a bomb on the former Ministry of Interior building in the Tel Al Hawwa neighborhood of Gaza City, completely destroying it. Three people, celebrating a wedding in an adjacent building, were killed and 46 others injured. Fifty-two year old Haniyeh Abdul Jawad was killed during the interior ministry raid while 15-year old Mahmoud Al Barsh was killed in a separate Israeli raid east of Jabaliya along with 23-year old Ismail Radwan, a member of the Izzedin Al Qassam Brigades. This latest Israeli raid is particularly alarming in terms of its complete disregard for Palestinian civilian life. MIFTAH finds it particularly concerning that the United States, the so-called broker in the recent re-launching of Palestinian/Israeli peace efforts, has stated that Israel’s military escalation falls within Israel’s “right to self-defense.” MIFTAH strongly calls on the United States and the international community at large to demand the protection of civilian life in the Gaza Strip, irrespective of their political stances. The right to life is a basic and inherent human right, which should be respected and protected by all, including an occupying power. Israel, in this capacity, should not be allowed to violate this right repeatedly with impunity and it is the responsibility of the international community to ensure that Israel is held accountable for its actions. MIFTAH would also like to express its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterate that the only solution is a just and lasting solution for the Palestinians represented in the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state.

[The] Eretz Acheret magazine has devoted its latest issue to one of the most neglected parts of Israel: the northwestern Negev. The name of the magazine sums it up best: It means "a different country" - a place that Israeli governments have ignored for years, and which the current government has officially handed over to the Israel Defense Forces Home Front. Kibbutzim, moshavim and small towns have been taking orders from generals for months now, testimony to the easy way out that Israel's leaders take whenever the need to assume responsibility comes up.
