Die IDf verhält sich [noch] äußerst ruhig, da die politische Lage um die Hamas als schwankend bezeichnet werden kann. Dazu sollte man in Betracht ziehen das sowohl der Islamic Jihad als auch die al-Aqsa-Brigaden interne Feunde für die Hamas darstellen. Derzeit sind die in Ägypten statt findenden "Sondierungsgespräche" zwischen Hamas und Israel mit ägyptischer Zwischenschaltung nicht abgesagt worden. Gerade hatte die Hamas eine Forderungsliste übergeben, sieht sich also in der guten Verhandlungsposition und schweigt neben Kondolenzadressen sich über den Donnerstag aus. Interessanterweise ist es die Ramallah-Dikdemokratur, die behauptet die Hamas hätte nur eine Woche der Ruhe die am Freitag endet versprochen. Eine Einigung zwischen Israel und der Hamas auf eine längere Waffenpause wäre für die Abbas-Regierung ein äußerst schwerer Rückschlag, da die einzige Funktion in der Angelegenheit die sie spielen darf das Aufstellen von "Grenzposten" ist.

Israel's air defences could fend off long-range ballistic missiles of the kind deployed by Iran and Syria but the Jewish state remains vulnerable to cruise missiles, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday. Long-running tensions between Israel and arch-foe Iran over the latter's nuclear programme have stirred regional war fears, with both countries at times flexing their military muscle. Israel, which is widely assumed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, designed its most advanced air defence system, Arrow II, around a doctrine of spotting and shooting down Iranian Shehab or Syrian Scud missiles at high altitudes. But Maariv daily said Israel remains unprepared for enemy cruise missiles, which fly at ground-hugging heights to dodge radar and can in theory be used for sneak nuclear strikes.
